Live Updates: Massive earthquake rocks Myanmar and Thailand

A powerful earthquake rocked Myanmar on Friday (March 28th, 2025) causing extensive damage across the country. Initially, it was discovered that, more than 150 people are dead and hundreds more injured after a 7.7-magnitude quake struck near the city of Mandalay, according to Myanmar’s military government.
The full extent of death, injury and destruction was not immediately clear — particularly in Myanmar, which is embroiled in a civil war, and where information is tightly controlled.
The US Geological Survey estimated that the death toll could surpass 10,000.

Tremors Felt in Thailand


The quake triggered the collapse of buildings hundreds of miles away in Bangkok. At least 10 people have died in the nation’s capital where a high-rise under construction collapsed and dozens are believed to be trapped under the rubble of an under-construction high-rise, officials said.
Rescue Operations in Bangkok Continue: Rescue operations continued into Saturday morning local time in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, as authorities scrambled to find dozens of people thought to be trapped under a collapsed building.
Photographs from the scene in the Chatuchak region show rescue workers dressed in red and orange uniforms gathered around the base of the building, as rescue dogs clamber over rubble in search of the more than 100 people feared trapped.
Video posted online on Saturday morning local time by Thailand’s rescue dog association showed a dog barking at the towering mound of concrete, signaling to its handlers that it had located someone beneath the debris.
As of 10 PM on Friday, at least 10 people had died in the Thai capital due to the quake, according to Deputy Bangkok Governor Tavida Kamolvej.
Earlier, the country’s Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said that rescue crews were working to free more than 100 people from the building.

India Dispatches Rescue Teams Relief Supplies to Quake-hit Myanmar


India, which named its relief mission for Myanmar as ‘Operation Brahma’, became first country to sent an 80-member National Disaster Response Force team to earthquake-hit Myanmar to assist in the rescue operations in the capital city of Nay-Pyi-Taw to help local authorities.
Hours after New Delhi delivered 15 tonnes of essential relief materials to Yangon in a military transport aircraft, two C130J planes of the Indian Air Force.
Two more C17 military aircraft of the IAF, carrying 60 para-field ambulances, will land in Myanmar shortly, the officials said.
