India slips five spots in Henley’s Passport Index

In the current scenario, the Indian passport is in 85th position, whereas its holders can enjoy visa-free access to 57 countries

As per the latest Henley Passport Index 2025, India’s ranking has dropped to 85th, slipping five spots from its previous position of 80th.
The index evaluates passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without a visa.
In the current scenario, the Indian passport is in 85th position, whereas its holders can enjoy visa-free access to 57 countries.
The country has reached its highest point in 2006, when it secured its position at 71, but then witnessed declines, particularly between 2015 and 2021.
Then a major drop occurred in 2021 when India ranked 90th, likely due to COVID-19-related travel restrictions. However, the ranking gradually improved to 80th in 2024, and now it’s ranked 85th in 2025.
Singapore passport has once again managed to reclaim the top position, offering visa-free access to 195 out of 227 destinations. Over the years, India’s passport ranking has experienced significant shifts. Japan secured that second place globally, offering its holder to enjoy visa-free travel to 193 locations.
Then the third place is shared among seven nations that is France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Finland, and South Korea, each offering their holders visa-free access to 192 destinations.
By moving up to 10th place, the UAE became the first Arab nation to make it into the top 10, marking a noteworthy milestone. Now, its holders can access 185 countries without visa, up from just 72 in 2015.
As per the recent passport index, some of the countries that have seen significant drops include the United States and the United Kingdom.
Over the past 10 years, the US has fallen from second to ninth place, while the UK, which was at the top in 2015, is currently in fifth place. Canada dropped from fourth to seventh position as well.
China has shown remarkable progress, rising from 94th in 2015 to 60th in 2025, with visa-free access to 85 destinations.
