Dhanushkodi got its name with the end of bow used by Lord Ram from Ramayana to decide the starting point of building a bridge to approach to Sri Lanka on a mission to rescue his wife Sita. The small town on the Pamban Island had its own railway station, post office and even a school and it was a natural stop to all travellers and pilgrims until 1964 when Rameswaram cyclone terribly attacked the city.
Visit the city with the remains of that drastic night, welcoming you with the railway station and a church with a small alter and its remains, truly a melancholic experience for anyone visiting here. Pause by the old walls of Dhanushkodi whispering its tale. Please keep in mind, entry into Dhanushkodi is restricted after 5pm, keep sufficient snacks. Don’t ever try to swim here, it is extremely unsafe.
